Meisje was busy this morning sharing her favorite shark toy with everyone in the office. As you can imagine, with a sweet look like that it doesn't take very long before someone gives her some attention!
We are proud to announce that Humber Design Group has been named one of the 2019 100 Best GREEN Workplaces in Oregon by Oregon Business Magazine! This ranking recognizes the wide spectrum of green practices we've implemented here at HDG, which we shared as part of the 100 Best Companies survey our team completed in late 2018. All winners of the 100 Best Green Workplaces will be revealed at a celebratory luncheon at The Nines Hotel on May 30th.
Our office pup Meisje is very helpful around the place, participating in activities, helping keep morale up, greeting anyone who delivers anything, and making sure someone uses (eats?) the ice cubes in the freezer. She also makes sure to sneak in naps on our behalf, particularly during meetings.
Being engineers, any day that celebrates numbers is a great day for us! So, happy Pi Day! In case you aren't a mathematically focused individual: 3.14159265 is the number known as Pi. It is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. For all circles of any size, Pi will be the same. Pi is also the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, so Pi (the number) is often represented with Pi (the letter). All that said, we think it's a great excuse to eat PIE!
HDG enjoyed a delicious lunch - make that breakfast - on Tuesday at La Luna Cafe! La Luna is a local, neighborhood cafe that specializes in brunch classics. The breakfast-inspired food was delicious, and we enjoyed a little time visiting away from the office and deadlines. What a tasty treat!
HDG was honored to attend Oregon Business Magazine's 100 Best Companies dinner Thursday evening. Ranking among the 33 best small companies made us both proud and determined to do our best for our team every single year. We were also humbled by the number of companies - large and small - who have developed incredible programs around employee wellness, happiness, and productivity. It was an inspirational event!
A groundbreaking ceremony for The Navigation Center was held on Tuesday. A public-private partnership, the new homeless shelter will house 100-beds for chronically homeless people in addition to support service space. The Navigation Center is truly a community-based response to the growing issue of homelessness in Portland. HDG is proud to be involved in this project!
Bridge Housing held a ceremony today to celebrate the topping out of The Vera! When completed, The Vera will offer 203 units of affordable housing consisting of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. HDG is proud to be involved in the project, providing complete civil engineering design services. Congratulations team!

Our sweet office pup never stops bestowing her love upon us all. Here she is offering her full support to our Controller, Leigh. Of course, Leigh tells her how pretty she is and gives her lots of love, so Meisje makes sure to offer her support often.
Meisje is always willing to lend a helping hand, or have you lend her a hand by holding her toy - but not without her holding it, too! Here she is "lending a hand" to our Controller, Leigh. So helpful!
We are proud to announce that Humber Design Group has made Oregon Business Magazine's 2019 list of the 100 Best Companies to Work for in Oregon! We've worked hard to foster an outstanding workplace for our team and are honored to be included on this list alongside many fantastic Oregon companies. The dinner recognizing winners and revealing the top 10 will be held on February 28th at the Oregon Convention Center.
It's true, and we apologize. We missed Meisje Monday! Our adorable furry office companion was quite helpful this week, patiently waiting for Kristian, her human, to finish what Meisje clearly thinks is less than an exciting meeting.
We truly enjoy our industry and our relationships. We offer a heartfelt thank you to our clients, colleagues, and everyone we work with for the amazing year, wonderful memories, and the long list of successful projects for our community! Happy Holidays!
HDG was the lucky winner of a fundraising auction item giving us cookies in the office once a month for a full year. Rose Villa resident Bob - we call him The Cookie Man - delivers our cookies personally each month. Thanks Bob!! Your cookies are amazing!
HDG office pup Meisje often walks about the office spreading her sweetness and cheer. Last week she spread smiles too, showing off her brand new toy. She loves everyone it seems, but is especially fond of you when you give her a new toy!
The HDG team held our annual holiday party at McMenamins Edgefield this past weekend. The food was amazing, the white elephant gift exchange brought more than a few good laughs, and the Dickens Carolers came to sing to us! The carolers have keen eyes - it took them seconds to spot an opportunity with HDG team member Joel Hill and his festive jingle bell vest, which subsequently became the highlight of their song "Jingle Bells" with Joel jingling his vest on cue. Such a great time!
Our sweet office pup, Meisje, makes her rounds multiple times a day to check on everyone in the office and ensure that all is well, work is being completed, and you've noticed how cute she is. She also spies on our neighbors regularly, shares her toys and love with everyone, and delights in a good ice cube to chomp on now and then. She is a joy to have in the office! And so we begin this new and regular post, sharing her joy and cuteness with you. Hopefully it will make your day, too! Here she is checking on our Marketing Director, Teri, who is always willing to give her scratches and tell her she's a good girl.
Humber Design was a proud design team member for TMT Development's The Marilyn apartments, which opened this week. The brand new, 57,000-SF apartment building features a blend of luxury and affordable housing in the heart of Southeast Portland. 20% of the units are reserved for residents making 80% of the median family income. LRS was the architect and Bremik Construction was the general contractor.

Students had the opportunity to pose a series of questions to the panelists to determine each panel member's career. The game show format creates a fun environment for learning. After a panelist's career was guessed, the panelist shared more information about what they do in their job.

This included operating as escorts for students and teachers who attended multiple competitions and conference events and working with other MESA volunteers to help attendees learn more about career paths and the opportunities that attending a four-year university can provide.
